Lovingston Opry

Welcome to the Lovingston Opry, reconnect with your Blueridge Heritage.

Blueridge music originates from Irish fiddle tunes that arrived in America during colonial times. Mixing with gospel hymns, folk music and the blues created by the African American culture, a unique mountain sound developed that’s been passed as a treasure through out the generations.

To understand Blueridge music roots, one only has to look at the culture and traditions of the early American settlers. A mixture of Germans, English Quakers, Scots-Irish, French Huguenots, Irish, Welsh and African Americans all bringing musical traditions from their homelands. These sounds blended and transformed as the families migrated and settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fiddles and banjos have traditionally been the backbone of this unique mountain-music sound. As early as the beginning of the 19th century banjo and fiddle groups became common place throughout the Blueridge mountains as uncles, cousins and grandfathers left their front porches to perform. Square dances , cornshuckings, bean-strings and community celebrations became the platform where anyone could hear and learn to play Blueridge mountain music.

As the years have come and gone, Blueridge mountain music has continued to flourish, passing from father to son to community. Come join us at the Lovingston Opry, a place where everyone can reconnect with Blueridge music and continue its time honored traditions. Keep your ears open and listen for the banjos, mandolins, fiddles and Blueridge mountain groups that have found their way to the Lovingston Opry.

Take some time and join us.
